The problem of classifying the semisimple subalgebras of the simple complex Lie algebras has a long history, going back at least to the work of Dynkin in the 50's. In this talk I will outline the main ideas behind computational methods for classifying the semisimple subalgebras up to linear equivalence. These methods have made it possible to construct a database of such subalgebras for the simple Lie algebras of ranks up to 8.
